The future of local government in Tetbury is uncertain

District Councillor Chris Twells has submitted a petition which requires that Tetbury Town Council call a town meeting to discuss his proposal to disband the Council and replace it with a charitable trust.  He is also proposing alternative funding arrangements, which would replace the town’s portion of the Council Tax (the Precept) with an annual charge of “no more than £12 per annum for a Band D property”.

Details of how this charitable trust will operate, who it would be accountable too and what services would no longer be provided to the people of Tetbury are, as yet, unclear.  Advice has been sought from Cotswold District Council (CDC) and the National Association of Local Councils (NALC) but no response has yet been received.

Councillor Liz Farnham, the Mayor of Tetbury and Chair of Tetbury Town Council said. “I welcome the opportunity to learn from District Councillor Chris Twells more about his proposal and any benefit for the residents and businesses of Tetbury, now and long into the future.”

The Town Meeting is to be held on Tuesday 28th November at 6pm, at Steepleton Court retirement village on the Cirencester Road.  It will include a vote on the questions posed by District Councillor Twells.  The outcome of the vote will determine whether there will be a referendum.  A referendum would be held between 3rd and 5th January 2024.
